I clicked Set up connection on a Play and landed on Connections with no idea what to do next
Last updated September 13, 2026
Some Plays show a Needs connection badge and a Set up connection button. Clicking it opens the Connections tab, and that is all it does: it does not jump to the card you need or open anything for you. Here is how to work out which connection that Play wants, and how to finish setting it up.
Step 1: read the Needs line on the Play
On the Plays tab, in the Start here view, each suggestion that shows the button also has a line starting with Needs:. That line names what it runs on. The wording differs a little between editions, but the common ones are:
- Find companies approaching a major milestone. Needs Tavily for live web scouting. Apollo is optional.
- Find my strongest new growth markets. Needs Tavily.
- Scout libraries or schools in this county. The base scan works without any key. Tavily only adds fresher results.
- Who owes me money? and Prepare me for tomorrow's events. These run on your payment, booking or calendar records, not on a web search key.
Step 2: find the right card on Connections
On the Connections tab, scroll to the section headed Lead finders. The cards scouting Plays use are:
- Tavily Search searches the public web. Most scouting Plays need this one.
- Apollo finds and enriches leads. It is optional for the milestone Play.
- Hunter.io finds and verifies email addresses.
If the list is long, type the name into the search box that reads Find a connection, like SMPL, Gmail or Stripe.

Step 3: get your key and paste it in
- The card shows Not yet. Click Paste key or Set this up for me. Both open the same secure key box.
- Click Open the Tavily Search key page (or Open the Apollo key page). Create or copy your API key there. For Apollo, create a master API key, because Apollo requires it for Organization Search.
- Paste the key into Your key and click Save securely.
The card now reads Key saved and shows Check usage and Remove key. Go back to Plays and run it.
Good to know
- The Set up connection button does not go away after you connect. It is a fixed reminder of what the Play runs on, not a live status. If the card on Connections says Key saved, you are done.
- Who pays for the searches. These services use credits from your own account with them. A scout run uses up to 12 of your Tavily credits, plus up to 4 Apollo credits if you connected Apollo. Booked Solid charges $0 for it.
- Saving does not test a Tavily key. Booked Solid does not spend a credit on a hidden test search. If the key is wrong, the first scouting run tells you Tavily rejected it.
